His journey towards creating something for her for them (a future). throughout the relationship however emma gets tired (my knees are cold) and leaves before he is able to give her the things he promised. i think the song is about the singer finally finding and doing the things he promised once to emma to someone else that he found. thats why hes singing for emma. the promises and hope of the relationship he had for emma are finally fulfilled, not just for emma though. hes too late. that was due forever ago.
