I work in palliative care. After a death, I light a candle, play this music and remember the soul who has moved on. At the end, I imagine a huge wrought-iron gate slowing closing. We are now separated, and moving on. It is a very rich piece of music.
This song never fails to make me cry. The melody is so haunting, yet beautiful, and takes me to a magical place of reminiscence and longing for the past to be a reality again. I remember trying to play this piece when I was super young, using one finger to punch in the keys. To this day, it is still my favorite piano piece. I have yet to find something else like it, and I doubt I ever will. Thank you David Lanz for this beautiful piece!
One of the most beautiful and yes, haunting songs I have ever heard. My wife and I were lying down on the bed late at night shortly after we were married when this song came on. We were transfixed and though it was late, we called the station and the DJ actually answered and told us what it was. Two of my piano playing kids have both played this song at recitals. Nice work, David Lanz.
I remember hearing this in the 3rd grade or so. I never really loved music wholly until I heard this piece. It was in my dreams all the time and I tried to play it as best I could. This piece was the thing that truly made me fall in love with music and performing. Here I am now as a Junior in Highschool and to this day I can play this entire piece from memory despite having to memorize hours upon hours of music. It still lingers in my mind, and I hope it stays within me forever.

People around me say, " New Age ( music)" is DEAD. This piece proves them wrong! So simple, yet...
